Dedicated to the memory of David 'Dave' Naulls

In loving memory of David ‘Dave‘ Naulls, who sadly passed away on 27th February 2024. He is now reunited with his parents, Vera and Walter, and his brother, Michael.

Dave was born in August 1942 in the town of Benfleet, Essex. He grew up in the Daws Heath/Hadleigh area, attending The King John School. He would often talk fondly about his life as a kid, where there was lots of land to play in, yet also working hard before and after school; doing chores on the neighbour’s farm were key virtues for him. The reward was that they had plenty of food when many others were struggling with rationing in a post war society. Farm work -with plenty of food- played a major part in building this strong man that we all knew and loved.

He did alright at school, he certainly had a brain complimented with the physical power, but he had a true passion for sport and was a proficient athlete and footballer, representing schools, Club and District. Unfortunately, professional football was not to be for Dave, trials at Tottenham Hotspur were unsuccessful, so he settled on a successful career in engineering, covering 30+ years at Shell. He also helped Shell on the football front too, winning a few trophies along the way.

He loved his cars (too many to remember!) but also sport, traveling and food & drink were also the things that made him tick. Politics and caravan & camping were also a passion of his, in which he normally created an argument somewhere with someone! Funnily enough, he was always calm on the golf course, despite the many struggles with the frustrating game.

Although Dave had a privileged upbringing on acres of land, he certainly wasn’t a flowers man. If anyone was thinking of sending something, he would have appreciated donations given to Prostate Cancer over receiving flowers. This will help others battle the great turmoil that Dave so powerfully endured. He dealt admirably with several health issues that he battled and beat over the years, never grumbling or mentioning pain. However, this certainly changed during his treatment for Prostate Cancer and the side effects that came with it. A truly humbling experience to witness.

As many of you would know, Dave enjoyed a glass or two of scotch whiskey. Therefore, if you remain undecided on whether to donate, gift or not, he would simply appreciate you raising a glass to his honour - wherever you may be in the world.

The family will take great joy and comfort in viewing any pictures, or reading stories that you wish to share with us, here on Dave’s tribute site. We also look forward to seeing good friends and family at the funeral on the 11th of April.
